The AJA is a non-profit Organization that was founded in 1977 to promote friendship, unity, and understanding between the peoples of Jamaica and the United States. As part of this effort, a scholarship program was established to assist college-bound high school and undergraduate students of Jamaican ancestry.
To qualify for financial assistance, each candidate is required to submit an application as well as an essay on a selected topic of relevance to Jamaica. The following prompt is the topic for this year:
Crime in Jamaica has become an increasingly serious concern to Jamaicans both at home and overseas. Discuss some of the social, political and historical factors that have contributed to this problem.
Essays and other application materials will be assessed and the most impressive applicants will be invited to an interview with members of the AJA Education Committee. Award recipients will be notified by the middle of July.
The Application form, Agreement (both attached), Transcript, and Essay should be mailed (postmarked) no later than May 15, 2010 to the following address:
