The AJA is a non-profit Organization that was founded in 1977 to promote friendship, unity, and understanding between the peoples of Jamaica and the United States. As part of this effort, a scholarship program was established to assist college-bound high school and undergraduate students of Jamaican ancestry.
To qualify for financial assistance, each candidate is required to submit an application as well as an essay on a selected topic of relevance to Jamaica. The following prompt is the topic for this year:
In 2008, the world watched as the United States made history in politics while Jamaica set new world records in Track and Field. What is the possible impact of these events on the social, political and economic fabric of Jamaica? Essays will be scored by an independent panel of judges, which includes college professors and high school educators in the Metropolitan Atlanta area. Subsequently, authors of the most eloquently written essays will be invited to an interview with members of the AJA Education Committee. The award recipients will be notified by the week of July 12, 2009.
